Stephen Lawrence mum's agony as murderer bids for freedom

- BY TOM PETTIFOR Crime Editor

STEPHEN Lawrence's mother yesterday branded one of his killers a coward for refusing to show his face at his parole hearing or name his fellow murderers.

Baroness Doreen Lawrence spoke out after watching the video stream of David Norris's bid for freedom over two days at London's Royal Courts of Justice.

Norris refused to face the camera while he gave evidence, or to name the four or five other attackers.

Lady Lawrence said outside the court: “He says he’s sorry for the pain he has caused me and my family. I didn't believe him. The only person he is sorry for is himself.

“He's a coward. He refused to show his face. He needs to look me in the eye and tell me what he did and why.”

In 2011, Norris, 49, was convicted of Stephen's racist murder in 1993.

He was jailed for life in early 2012, with a minimum term of 14 years and three months.

His minimum sentence expired in December and this is the first time he has been considered for release.

On Tuesday, Norris was repeatedly asked who he was with on the night Stephen was attacked in Eltham, South East London.
