‘A very small step forward ...not enough’

EXPERTS have rejected mass prostate cancer testing, saying it would cause “overdiagnosis” and lead to men with harmless tumours having surgery.

The UK National Screening Committee recommends offering the prostate specific antigen test only to men with a known genetic risk linked to the BRCA genes.

It said inviting men known to be at higher risk, Black men and those with a family history of the disease, for PSA tests would cause “more harm than good”.

Olympic cycling legend Sir Chris Hoy, who has a terminal diagnosis, called regular checks for men with the BRCA genes “a very small step forward” and “not enough”.
