Brain drain: Draining Sri Lanka’s economic and social progress
Daily FT
|August 22, 2025
THE findings of a recent study undertaken by two academics attached to Peradeniya University — Prof. Wasantha Athukorala and Lakshman Kumara — analysing the migration patterns of Sri Lankan state university graduates with a focus on science and related disciplines is an eye opener to the gravity of the exodus of top-quality human talent from the country. The research had found that over 50% of graduates from government campuses — including many from science, engineering, and agriculture faculties — leave for greener pastures forever.
-
The researchers had collected data from the 19 government universities across Sri Lanka to arrive at their conclusions. Only limited details of the study were reported by The Daily Mirror newspaper recently, and no formal academic publication has been made available regarding the analysis. Hence, how the sample was determined and what was the methodology adopted for the research are still unknown, resulting in few observers raising doubts about the accuracy of the findings. However, the empirical evidence clearly affirms that the rate of educated people leaving the island has accelerated over the last few years, particularly from 2021 onwards when the signs of the economic crisis were gaining visibility.

China’s entry into SAARC: Gateway to South Asian prosperity
\"CHINA as a full member of SAARC? At first, the idea may sound bold, even strange. But it could be the spark the region needs to move forward. For years, SAARC has carried a huge promise; a platform to connect markets, people, and ideas across South Asia. Yet political tensions have often slowed its progress. Bringing China into the fold could give SAARC fresh energy, new opportunities, and a stronger voice in the world.\"

Ozone layer: Skin of earth, shield of human wellbeing
September 16 is the day designated by the United Nations to annually honour the preservation of the ozone layer. This day was proclaimed to be dedicated to create public awareness on the ozone layer and its significance to human existence, in the year 1994. The decision to create a separate day for the protection of the ozone layer was linked to the signing of the Montreal Protocol on substances that deplete the ozone layer, way back in 1987.

Tribute to Rajiv Perera on 60th birthday
IN life we meet many people, most of whom hardly leave a trace of their passing. Some, very few in fact, leave a mark so deep that no passage of time can erase it. For me, at the very top of that list is Rajiv Perera.
