Wine up 7p as Labour ‘glass tax’ hits drinkers

CUSTOMERS face paying more for wine and beers as a result of an eco “glass tax”, industry bosses warn.

The scheme announced in 2019 will force those selling packaged goods to pay Extended Producer Responsibility fees for the products’ disposal.

It means a standard wine bottle could cost about 7.2p more, a 330ml beer bottle will rise by around 3.2p and a bottle of spirits will be 8.8p pricier.

The UK Spirits Alliance’s Alex MacDonald said: “We are fully supportive of the principle behind the Government’s sustainability agenda. However, punishing fees for glass will hurt business and increase prices for consumers.”

The green levies also apply to aluminium, plastic, cardboard and wood.
