Esther McVey says 'some colleagues put leadership ambitions ahead of party's interests'

TORY MPs' PLOT TO TOPPLE RISHI IS JUST 'SELF INDULGENCE'

ESTHER McVey insists the "overwhelming majority" of Conservative MPs support Rishi Sunak and want an end to "leadership positioning".

The common sense minister accused some colleagues of putting their leadership amibitions before the party's interests.

She said plotting to topple the Prime Minister was "self-indulgence".

Ms McVey maintains Mr Sunak's sensible management of the UK's economy should demand loyalty and makes him the right leader to challenge Sir Keir Starmer.

Inflation is due to fall further this week as ministers seek to bring it down to 2%.

The call for unity by Sunak loyalists comes amid rumours of a bid to install Commons leader Penny Mordaunt as the new Tory chief. She has denied being involved in any such plan.

Any change of leader would be an astonishing third since the last general election.

But minister without portfolio Ms McVey told the Daily Express it was time for unity, not change.

The Tatton MP MP continued: "Conservative members, voters and the overwhelming majority of MPs are tired of the self-indulgence of some colleagues."

She urged fellow MPs to tell the public about "all the good things" the PM has been doing to tighten up immigration rules, to break the European Convention on Human Rights with the Rwanda Bill and to stand up for biological gender. Ms McVey added: "These are all things that would be overturned by a woke Labour government led by Sir Flip Flop who doesn't even know what a woman is!"

Tory vice-chairman James Daly also scoffed at suggestions of a further change.

He continued: "We need to focus on getting on with the job and rallying behind the Prime Minister so that our plan continues to deliver."
