Summer of riots feared after anti-migrant demo

FEARS of a summer of riots intensified last night after Angela Rayner warmed that anger over immigration is damaging social cohesion.

The Deputy Prime Minister told Cabinet colleagues they had to acknowledge the “real concerns people have” amid anti-migrant discontent in London and Norfolk.

She also cited economic insecurity, the rapid pace of de-industrialisation and declining trust in institutions as she gave an update on her work on social cohesion.

Clashes

Last night protesters faced police outside the Britannia International Hotel in Canary Wharf, East London, amid unconfirmed claims that asylum seekers are being housed there.

Around 150 gathered on Monday night outside the Park Hotel in Diss, Norfolk, for a “peaceful” protest after the Home Office announced it would change it from housing asylum-seeker families to single men. But footage posted on social media, including by supporters of far-right activist Tommy Robinson, showed clashes between proand anti-migrant groups.
