UK-wide weather warnings as events are cancelled

HEAVY rain, wind and snow are set to scupper the New Year's Eve plans of millions tonight.

Edinburgh's street party and fireworks display was cancelled yesterday due to the bad weather - and more events are likely to follow.

Texas, the Scottish rock band who were due to headline the New Year's Eve concert in Princes Street Gardens in the Scottish capital, said on Instagram: "Unfortunately, tomorrow's gig has been cancelled due to the weather.

"We hope everyone stays safe and has a great New Year when it comes." Edinburgh Christmas Market was also closed due to the conditions.

Thousands of events are at the mercy of warnings Britain braces itself for extreme weather and travel chaos.

The Met Office has issued multiple yellow "be aware" alerts as lasting until Thursday, with almost all of the UK affected.
