MPs demand 'urgent action' over Gentoo 15

MPs from three political parties have demanded an aquarium takes "urgent" steps to move 15 penguins kept without natural light or fresh air.

Eleven Lib Dems, Labour's Rachael Maskell and the Commons' four Green Party MPs told Sea Life London Aquarium they were "deeply alarmed" about its gentoo habitat.

The Daily Express, Freedom for Animals and the Born Free Foundation are demanding the birds live in a more suitable environment. More than 4,700 people have signed a petition backing the campaign.

The aquarium says vets were consulted on the design of the enclosure, which gives "an excellent balance of water and land" for the gentoos.

But the MPs are "particularly concerned" about the conditions in which the "intelligent and social animals" are currently held.
