LABOUR 'BETRAYS' VOTERS WITH EIGHT MORE YEARS OF ILLEGAL MIGRATION
Daily Express
|October 14, 2024
SIR Keir Starmer has been accused of "betraying" voters after he signed up to eight more years of uncontrolled illegal immigration.
The premier had pledged to smash the Channel people smuggling gangs.
But yesterday the Office pubHome lished contracts to run processing centres in Kent - with expiry dates of 2032.
Conservative leadership contest finalist Robert Jenrick, inset, accused Sir Keir of a "total betrayal of the British public". The £521million contract requires a firm to manage the Manston and Dover migrant sites including staffing, security and healthcare.
The winning company will be handed the contract for an initial six years, beginning in 2026.
But there is also the option to extend the term for up to four years raising the possibility that Britain will still be processing illegal migrants in 12 years' time.
The revelation led to accusations that the Government is anticipating the small boats crisis may last for at least another eight years.
It sparked uproar among those people demanding an urgent end to the crossings.
Critics fear the scale of the illegal arrivals will put social cohesion and national security at risk.
During the general election campaign, Labour claimed it would be a priority to end such crossings.
But there have been more than 13,000 arrivals since the party took power in July.
Former immigration minister Mr Jenrick writes in the Daily Express today: "It was never going to hold up for long. But - I suspect - even Labour are surprised that after just 100 days their pledge to 'smash the gangs' lies in tatters."
