Israel vows revenge for Hezbollah attack

ISRAEL has warned it plans further bloody retaliation strikes on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon as fears grew of a "catastrophe beyond belief" in the Middle East conflict.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed the terror group would "pay a heavy price" for the rocket strike at the weekend in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights that left at least 12 young people dead.

Jerusalem's war cabinet yesterday drew up strategies for further revenge action, "authorising" Mr Netanyahu's government to decide on the "manner and timing" of the response.

The UN urged "maximum" calm from both sides, warning escalation could "engulf the entire region in a catastrophe beyond belief".

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken also called for restraint but the US also said Israel has the right to defend itself seen as a green light for further air strikes.
