Horror as car ploughs into crowd

The horrific incident - the second of its kind in Germany in two months targeted about 1,000 trade union protesters just after 10.30am local time yesterday.

A man was arrested at the scene after police fired at the Mini Cooper. It was unknown if he was injured as he was seized.

imageAuthorities confirmed the suspect was previously known to police for drug and theft offences.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz condemned the attack and vowed the alleged perpetrator, a 24-yearold Afghan national, "must be punished and must leave the country".

Mr Scholz added: "The government will be starting flights back to Afghanistan, despite the lack of diplomatic ties.

"And although this is complicated because you can't fly them there directly, this is something that we will continue to do, not just as a one-off, but as a continuous thing."

Authorities said police officers were driving behind the demonstrators in the Dachauer Strasse area, near Munich's historic centre.

imageThe Mini then overtook them and "sped up", before hitting the rear of the crowd.

Police confirmed they had fired one shot during the arrest. Videos posted online showed the chaotic aftermath of the brutal attack.

Several people were seen lying injured on the ground and being tended to by emergency crews and fellow demonstrators, as police restrained the suspect.

Officers could be seen inspecting the severely damaged vehicle, which was parked ominously near an abandoned pram and sur rounded by medical debris.
