'Historic victory' for Isle of Man assisted dying law

THE Isle of Man will be the first place in the British Isles to legalise assisted dying, following a landmark victory for campaigners yesterday.

A Bill seeking to change the law passed its Third Reading after Members of the House of Keys lower house of the island parliament voted 16 to eight in favour.

Now assisted dying could be made available to terminally ill residents of the Crown dependency as soon as 2027. Emotions had run high in the debate as MHKS spoke passionately for and against change.

Politician Dr Alex Allinson, who had proposed the Bill, said last night: "We have taken another step forward for real change in the Isle of Man to give terminally ill people much-needed choice and protection at the end of life.
