WILDFIRES have continued to wreak destruction across southern Europe, forcing thousands of people to flee “doomsday” damage.

- By Toby Codd

Blazes that ripped through Spain, Italy, France, Turkey and Greece were caused by the hot weather, strong winds - and arsonists.

Some 1,700 sq miles has been hit by fire - twice the average since 2006 says the EU Science Hub.

In the Greek city of Patras officials evacuated a children’s hospital and a retirement home but 500 vehicles were destroyed.

Giorgos Karvanis, a volunteer from Athens, said: “What does it look like? It looks like doomsday. May God help us.”
