DNA catches widow killer 12 years later

A FORMER kitchen fitter has been found guilty of murdering an 86-yearold widow in 2013 after DNA was discovered on her nail clippings.

Retired postmistress Una Crown was found with her throat cut, stab wounds to her chest and her clothing burnt at her bungalow in Wisbech, Cambs, on January 13, 2013.

Mistakes

Police did not initially consider her death suspicious and there was a twoday delay in preserving the scene because of what prosecutor John Price called a "grave error of judgment by officers who went to the house".

David Newton, 70, was charged last year having previously been arrested without charge in 2013.

He denied murdering Mrs Crown but was found guilty after a trial at Cambridge Crown Court. He appeared open-mouthed and glanced at the jury as the foreman returned the verdict after 29 hours of deliber.
