Divided Poland at the polls

POLAND went to the polls at the weekend with the deeply divided electorate issuing its verdict on two drastically different visions for the future.

The governing nationalist Law and Justice Party wants a third term while the centre-Right Civic Coalition presents this as an existential threat to the country.

Law and Justice, led by Jaroslaw Kaczynski, portrays itself as the defender of sovereignty and of ordinary Poles against the elites and the EU.
