Breeding ends for penguins in basement

AN aquarium has halted the breeding of captive gentoo penguins in its basement after talks with animal rights campaigners.

London Aquarium's decision comes amid a high-profile crusade to get the 15 birds moved from the underground enclosure which has no fresh air or daylight.

In a statement following two-day negotiations with concerned groups, the aquarium said: “Given the complexity of the issue, further work is now needed to consider possible next steps.

“While this is under way, breeding will remain paused, and the ongoing care of the 15 penguins, including two who are geriatric, will remain the priority of the teams looking after them on a day-to-day basis.”

It added: “The discussion was open, constructive and rightly challenging at times.”
