Mango Crop Crisis - Unseasonal Rains, Pests, and Price Surge Affecting Farmers

The mango farming community in India is grappling with an unprecedented crisis due to a combination of unseasonal rains, pests, and an unexpected rise in market prices.

Farmers who have toiled for six months to cultivate the beloved ‘king of fruits’ now face significant financial losses as their crops are damaged, and the fruit fails to meet consumer expectations in terms of both quality and price.

Dr. Asha Devi, Vice President of Goutham Buddha Society, emphasized the severity of the situation, noting that the rains this week have devastated crops that were on the verge of harvest. Mango orchards, along with other crops like Sweet Lemon, Pomegranate, Sapota, papaya, Water melon, musk melon and guava , have been severely impacted. While a ton of water melon now costs Rs. 4,000, the price of basic items such as onions has remained low, further exacerbating the financial strain on farmers.
