The streets of Hyderabad and Secunderabad are alive with fervor as Telangana celebrates Bonalu, a month-long Hindu festival dedicated to Goddess Mahakali and her regional forms, including Mysamma, Pochamma, and Yellamma.
-
Held annually during Ashada Masam (July-August), this vibrant festival is a heartfelt expression of gratitude and devotion, drawing lakhs of devotees to temples across the state.
A Festival Rooted in History and Faith
Bonalu’s origins trace back to the 19th century when a devastating plague struck Hyderabad and Secunderabad. In 1813, a military battalion from Hyderabad, stationed in Ujjaini, Madhya Pradesh, prayed to Goddess Mahakali at the Mahakali Temple for relief from the epidemic. When the plague subsided, the battalion returned and built the Ujjaini Mahakali Temple in Secunderabad, initiating the tradition of offering Bonalu. Since then, the festival has become a cornerstone of Telangana’s cultural identity, officially declared the state festival in 2014.
The festival also carries a mythological significance, symbolizing Goddess Mahakali’s annual return to her parental home during Ashada Masam. Devotees welcome her with offerings, akin to pampering a married daughter on her visit home.
