SARI SIR spotlights tribulations of Indian women in South Africa

CAPE Town audiences will get the early scoop on SARI SIR, a captivating dance drama that will be breaking new ground.

For the first time non-Indian performers will take part in a 90-minute production narrating and using the classical dance form of Bharathanatyam to capture the toil and tribulations of Indian women who arrived as indentured labourers.

Before it tours nationally next year, this spellbinding production will premiere exclusively at The Little Theatre, Hiddingh Campus, University of Cape Town, from 17 - 19 November 2025.

This premiere coincides with the 165th anniversary of the arrival of the first Indian indentured labourers in South Africa on 16 November 1860 - an historical moment which profoundly shaped the cultural, emotional, and social landscape of the country and continues to live on in the memories and identities of South African Indian communities.

SARI SIR is presented by the Centre for Theatre, Dance and Performance Studies (CTDPS) at UCT and Sharana Performing Arts; and written, choreographed, and directed by Saranya Devan.
