THE deadly confrontation between India and Pakistan marks the worst violence between the nuclear-armed neighbours in two decades, further heightening regional instability.

The two intensified the exchange of heavy artillery fire along their contested frontier yesterday, following deadly missile strikes launched by New Delhi against its long-standing rival.
At least 38 people have been reported dead, with Islamabad claiming that 26 civilians were killed due to Indian strikes and cross-border firing, while New Delhi cites 12 fatalities from shelling initiated by Pakistan. The outbreak of violence follows accusations by India that Pakistan supported a recent attack on tourists in the Indian-administered region of Kashmir, which Islamabad vehemently denies.
