CHE GUEVARA IN THE CONGO

IN 1965, Ernesto “Che” Guevara, the Argentine-born revolutionary who had become a hero of the Cuban Revolution, arrived in the heart of Africa to wage a clandestine campaign in the Congo. It was a little-known chapter of his life, but one that marked a profound shift in his revolutionary strategy and worldview.

Although ultimately unsuccessful, Guevara's mission in the Congo left a remarkable imprint on his political identity, internationalist vision, and the admiration of leaders like Nelson Mandela and Fidel Castro.

After the success of the Cuban Revolution, Guevara's vision of global anti-imperialist struggle expanded rapidly. He believed that Africa, much like Latin America, was ripe for revolution against colonial and neocolonial oppression. In 1965, following the assassination of Congolese independence leader Patrice Lumumba and the political fragmentation that followed, Guevara saw an opportunity to ignite a socialist uprising.
