THE title of the book intrigued me. What is a sinner's bench?
Conjuring up visions of medieval practices, reading Maren Bodenstein's memoir The Sinner's Bench revealed much more than a humiliation.
It underscored a historical journey, encompassing her own fractured family history and the history of the German Lutheran missionaries in South Africa. Sweeping in its scope it is a very personal story using memory, myth, letters, archival material as it traces the mapped visions of generations of Lutheran missionaries.
