Banning it for children is no silver bullet
-
A debate over banning access to social media for children under 16 is gaining traction in India.
This year’s Economic Survey flagged digital addiction as an emerging public-health concern, urging platforms to enforce age verification, adopt safer defaults, and curb features such as autoplay, targeted advertising, and gambling-like interfaces. It further recommended structured intervention, including differentiated data plans for educational-versus-recreational use, cyber-safety education, mandatory physical activity in schools, and parental training on screen-time management. Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw recently said age-based restriction was now under discussion. French President Emmanuel Macron also made a similar suggestion at the recent India AI Impact Summit.
