Asean urged to act on space debris risks
Business Mirror
|March 23, 2026
THE risk from space debris is rising as global rocket launches accelerate, prompting Southeast Asian nations to strengthen coordination on monitoring and managing objects in orbit and during reentry, a Philippine space official warned.
At the opening of a regional seminar-workshop in Manila, the Philippine Space Agency (PhilSA) highlighted hazards posed by debris from rocket staging and the uncontrolled return of large rocket components, which could threaten satellites, aircraft and communities on the ground.
PhilSA Deputy Director General Marc Caesar Talampas said the region should expand its approach to space safety beyond tracking objects in orbit to covering their entire lifecycle.
