Aim for meaning not just medals

YOU are taught early on that goals should be clear, measurable and impressive.
You are taught to “earn this amount,” “lose this weight,” or “reach for that title.” These are outcome-based goals and they dominate how success is usually defined. They look motivating on paper but often feel exhausting in real life. You may hit the target and still feel empty, or miss the target and feel like a failure. That quiet discomfort is often a sign that the goal was never fully aligned with who you are and how you want to live.
Values-based goals start from a different place. Instead of asking what you want to achieve, you ask how you want to live. Values are qualities of action and describe how you want to show up, rather than what you want to collect. Honesty, curiosity, kindness, growth, patience, courage and balance are examples of values. But note also that they are not boxes to check off but directions you can return to again and again no matter what season you are in.
On the other hand, outcome-based goals focus on a finish line. Values-based goals focus on the path. When your goal is outcome-based, your motivation depends on results you cannot fully control. When your goal is values-based, your motivation is renewed every time you act in alignment. This shift reduces burnout and increases consistency because progress is no longer all or nothing.
