Licensing bid sparks bowls club dispute

RESIDENTS FEAR NON-MEMBERS WILL HAVE ACCESS TO FACILITIES
NEIGHBOURS have forced a bowls club to defend a move which could allow nonmembers to use the facilities.
Barton Bowling and Social Club, on Dunstall Road, is exclusively for members and their guests.
Now the club wants to change its current licence from a club licence to a premises licence, which would allow nonmembers to use the site.
The club, which was founded in 1927, currently has 400 members and holds numerous events throughout the year.
Between 2009 and 2019, a number of temporary event notices were granted, allowing the club to hold events which nonmembers could attend. During this time, no objections were made to Staffordshire Police, Environmental Health or the council.
The change was prompted by a complaint which indicated the club was acting outside its current licence.
