Increased casework Calls for a rise in number of city councillors

THE size of Bristol City Council should expand, soon according to a City Hall boss with six more politicians elected.

Seventy councillors currently represent different parts of Bristol, but the city’s growing population means that their workloads are increasingly stretched.

The next time voters in Bristol will head to the polls in local elections will be in May 2028. This time, voters could be electing 76 councillors to represent the city, pending an ongoing review of how large councils should be across England.

The Local Government Boundary Commission England is reviewing the size of councils. An update on what Bristol will tell the review will be given to councillors in a full council meeting on Tuesday. A report from Tim O'Gara, the council's head of legal and democratic services, set out the details.
