Health 'More than half of adults in city are overweight or obese'

MORE than half of Bristol's adults are overweight or obese - but health bosses warn telling people to simply to eat less is not helpful and could cause harm.

The city council has signed a new health pledge in response to what officials describe as a "complex and multifaceted" obesity crisis.

The Why Weight? Pledge for Creating Healthier Places Together manifesto, is part of a wider campaign across Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire that aims to "address the root causes of obesity and associated ill-health, as well as reduce weight stigma and health inequalities".

A report presented to Bristol's public health and communities committee warned: "Oversimplification of obesity as simply being a consequence of individual choices around eating and activity is both incorrect and harmful, contributing to weight stigma."
