Day of beach racing called off as storm a 'risk to life'

THE popular Weston Beach Race motorbike event was called off on Saturday as organisers battled Storm Amy.

People planning to attend the event on the beach at Weston-super-Mare were told to stay away with a "risk to life" warning.

Hundreds of competitors and thousands of people were due to fill the beach in North Somerset, but were told to stay indoors or in their tents and campervans as storm-force winds battered the exposed coastal site.

Race director Gareth Hockey described the scene overnight as Storm Amy raged with gusty winds that blew over portable toilets, gazebos and marquees, and some of the motorbikes themselves.
