STOCKED up on honey in Brittany last week. Proper honey, that is, bought from a certified local producer at a market - and although the price was several times what you would expect to be charged for a plastic bottle of 'honey' in any supermarket, I was more than happy to pay it.

Because my euros were not merely supporting a local business and not merely helping me acquire a luxury product, but underwriting the maintenance of a traditional craft without the efforts of whose practitioners we would likely all starve.

But yet again one of the many mysteries of the world of the apiarist set me pondering.
