THE Barton Hill History Group (BHHG) is this month having two separate events on the subject of Barrow Road.
-
It's still there, but is now partly subsumed into the St Philips Causeway bit of the A4320, while the rxest is just a run through part of Barton Hill.
In former times, though, it was a main thoroughfare connecting Barton Hill and Lawrence Hill, and in the middle was the famous 13-arch viaduct taking the road over a massive complex of railway lines next to the big engine sheds.
Towards the Lawrence Hill end, as the BHHG publicity recalls, "it went through Newtown where there were shops, off-licences, the Freemasons Arms Hotel, Bill Sparke's newsagent, and the Wesley Hall.
