We owe it to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for us

Last week I read how Second World War veteran Alec Penstone had told telly interviewers that the sacrifice of those who fell more than 80 years ago 'wasn't worth it', saying that the country has 'gone to rack and ruin'.

It was genuinely one of the saddest things I've heard in ages, purely because of the significance of the person saying it - this wasn't some professional controversialist venting their spleen in order to generate comments and likes.

This was a 100-year-old - one of the remaining few members of the Greatest Generation, to whom we owe pretty much everything we hold dear today - providing his very own searing critique of modern society.

His comments have, quite understandably, caused something of a national debate, with many agreeing with his views.
