The night proves right for the shore anglers to stock up on their catches

With the hot and calm conditions over the past week, the best of the fishing has been at night for shore anglers, writes BEN CALLIGHAN.

Local boat fishermen are still producing some great catches into deeper water, while there have also been an increasing number of thornback rays appearing alongside some good-sized bull huss, smooth-hounds and sole.

Fleetwood and District Angling Club’s latest match was at Stanah on Sunday evening.

This was a worm and fish bait-only match, so it was inevitable that catches were lower than if everyone had peeler crab.

A few catches were expected with 12 anglers taking part but, in all honesty, the fishing was disappointing.

Maybe the hot weather has put the fish off the feed but what was surprising was the lack of flounders.

Only three caught, though quite a few eels and a bass were landed.
