History of Fleetwood Pier

Planned from the late 1890s, it was not until 1906 that The Fleetwood Victoria Pier Company was formed in preparation for construction.

Architect Mr T G Lumb, whose creations include famous Blackpool landmarks like the Savoy Hotel, was in charge of design.

He envisaged a promenade deck and jetty of 200m in length and an ornate pavilion to stand at the entrance flanked by two small kiosks in the same style.

The aim was to complete the work by the May weekend of 1910, but when the time came the festivities of May Day were postponed due to the death of King Edward VII.

Despite their being large crowds causing historic scenes when the new King George the V was proclaimed, there was less of a visiting crowd arriving for Whitsuntide that year, due in part to the country's national grief and also to some unseasonable weather.

The holiday began on Saturday, May 14 and it was a lovely day, but rain fell all day on the Sunday, before brightening again for the Monday.

Most businesses closed for the holiday, providing time to visit the new, almost completed pier.

At this time the work was unfinished, but at the entrance a temporary kiosk was erected for entertainment by a troupe of Pierrots.
