Developer drops retirement flats plan for eyesore pub site

Ambitious plans to build a £6.5m apartment block for the over-55s on the site of a pub which burnt down have been scrapped.

There were hopes that the proposals for the four to five-storey building at the former Mariner's pub, on Norbreck Road, would finally smarten up a site which had become an eyesore since the hostelry was demolished in 2008.

The Mariner's burned down in 2007, and Housing 21, a not-for-profit provider of retirement housing and extra care for older people, was granted planning permission in June 2022 to build 35 flats.
