Context is the crucial missing ingredient in today's journalism

Context is everything. Not a new mantra.

It can, indeed must, be applied to the most ancient of documents.

But the whole idea of imbuing life with very well defined perspectives has not only been back in the news. It became the news.

I refer to the still very much unresolved legal clash between Donald Trump and the BBC over the reporting of a speech prior to the storming of the United States Capitol by a mob of Trump supporters on January 6 2021.

In just over 40 days time that will be a full five years ago. So much appears to have happened since, it seems an age ago. But once more, it has become a point of contention over concerns about how it was reported, or rather reflected upon, by British television.

Not least, it has led to another outbreak of the BBC, which has consequently sacrificed a director general and a head of news, becoming yet again self-obsessed.

Or as my grandad, always a polite sort of chap, would doubtless have observed: sticking its head between its legs and whistling up its Barcelona.
