Terrible shot! – was this the most unusual injury in all of football?
Black Country Bugle

ANKLE sprain, thigh strain, knee injury. There are many reasons footballers have to cry off but when Wolves pre-World War I legend Jackery Jones missed a game it was almost certainly unique in the annals of peacetime football.
The full-back was absent, shot!
Being a Shropshire lad, Jackery was fond of shooting and was out on a Friday evening with some gamekeeper pals near Wellington. A report in the Birmingham Evening Mail said he "was accidentally shot and several pellets entered his body. He was removed to the Shrewsbury Hospital where he was detained."
Another report said he had been hit in his lower body and that several pellets would have to be extracted.
His misfortune was widely reported and even the Jersey Times and the Londonderry Standard carried a couple of paragraphs
The incident meant Jones missed the following day's Second Division game against Barnsley at Molineux, another Jones — James Horace — deputising and helping Wolves to win 5-1.
The game also marked the first appearance of the season by an Oxford University amateur by the name of Kenneth Hunt.
