London City looks a capital investment to win the Ebor

LONDON City can secure victory in the Sky Bet Ebor Handicap (Heritage Handicap) (GBBPlus Race) (3.35pm) at York this afternoon.

Aidan O'Brien's four-year-old can give his Ballydoyle handler a first win in the feature on the Knavesmire since Mediterranean in 2001.

The Ebor is not necessarily a race that O’Brien has targeted down the years and London City - and Queenstown - will be his first runners since outsider Harrison’s Cove trailed in 18th of 19 behind Willing Foe 13 years ago and only his seventh entrant overall.

But when he does send one over from Ireland for any race it is worth noting as his Changingoftheguard was beaten a head into second by Willie Mullins’ Sesenta in the 2009 Ebor and Honolulu was also runner-up to Purple Moon two years earlier, while Mikado was third in 2004.

London City already has a victory on the Knavesmire to his name having scored in a 1m4f handicap at last year’s Dante meeting. That is one of only two wins, but he has only had seven career outings so far and clearly has plenty of scope for improvement particularly over this 1m6f distance.

The grey son of Justify was down the field on his seasonal return over 2m½f at the Curragh, but ran okay when fifth to Al Riffa over this similar distance in the Group Two Curragh Cup last month.

Back down into handicap company on a track he clearly acts well on, London City should be spot-on to run a big race. He can build on those two efforts this season to land the prestigious contest and give O’Brien a second Ebor victory 24 years on from his first, despite being passed over for Queenstown by stable jockey Ryan Moore.
