BIRMINGHAM CITY MISS OUT ON WEMBLEY CUP TRIUMPH - BUT TEAM STILL DID FANS PROUD IN A STELLAR WEEK

- BRIAN DICK

Heartbreak but fans can still smile

IT was not to be... despite the excitement of promotion last week, Blues failed to clinch the double at Wembley yesterday after a dismal performance against Peterborough in the Vertu Trophy final.

imageBirmingham brought the League One title with them to Wembley and hoped to leave the famous old stadium with thr trophy.

imageInstead 50,000 Bluenoses departed with such disappointment at a missed opportunity that it was easy to forget that five days earlier they had completed Objective A and just hours ago they had won the division without lifting another finger.

imageBlues' record this season now stands at played 54, won 39, drawn nine, lost six. As difficult as yesterday's trip to Wembley was, when things settle down it won't obscure the wider campaign.

imageIt had been Birmingham City's first game at Wembley in 14 years.

imageDavies has done an outstanding job in his first season as a manager and while he has been lavishly backed by the club's owners, his team have barely missed a beat. Before the match he issued a rallying call to fans:

image"It is impossible not to appreciate the sense of occasion on Sunday.
