Former Lord Mayor in 'dategate' scandal set to lose VIP privileges

Labour's Muhammed Afzal, 79, who previously represented Aston, was embroiled in allegations of "gifting" packs of dates to voters and then lying to an election court about it in a bid to avenge defeat at local council elections in May 2022.

His deceit was only uncovered when a doorbell video emerged showing him on the election trail distributing the gifts.

The council was petitioned to strip him of his honorary title and privileges, including free parking in the city centre and the right to use the title on business cards and letterheads - but it has taken two years to act.

Mr Afzal, who also chairs Birmingham Central Mosque, had resisted the action, claiming he was being discriminated against by virtue of his age and race.

Listed on the papers for today's full council meeting is a recommendation to "remove the title of honorary alderman, and all the benefits affiliated to having the title, from former councillor and Lord Mayor Muhammed Afzal".

While the petition to strip him of his title was only signed by Liberal Democrat, Green and Conservative councillors, it is understood Labour members will not oppose the sanction.
