End of road for appeal over HMO extension

A SOLIHULL homeowner is facing enforcement action after a planning inspector rejected an appeal.

The decision is the latest twist in a long-running saga concerning an extension which was built on a small house in multiple occupation (HMO) in the village of Elmdon.

In 2024, Solihull planners gave permission for a garage and side extension at the house, in Old Lode Lane, to be converted into a two-storey side extension.

But after work was completed it emerged that the development had not followed the previously-approved plans.

Applicant Steven Hassanali went on to apply for retrospective permission for the two-and-a-half storey extension, including the changes already made, saying it was needed “to provide a separate apartment as a part of the established overall small HMO use”
