Council votes to ditch 'toxic' net zero term
Birmingham Mail
|August 19, 2025
SOLIHULL Council is to ditch the environmental term net zero following a fierce debate.
Councillors clashed over renaming a plan on carbon emissions - with one claiming some residents saw net zero as a “toxic” term.
A council board meeting held a lengthy debate on the change, with a vote finally settling on using Solihull Climate Change Action Plan instead of Net Zero Action Plan (NZAP).
In 2021 the authority agreed a plan setting out action to support Solihull becoming a net zero borough by 2041, following the authority declaring a climate emergency in 2019.
During the debate Cllr Alison Rolf said: "For me, going from net zero kind of suggests it’s unattainable, is it?”
