NEGLECT at a major Midlands hospital resulted in the death of a newborn baby, a coroner has found.

Fatima Khan, from Stone, Staffordshire, lived only for a few hours due to 'gross failure of care' at Royal Stoke University Hospital.

The hospital's blunders included switching off a heart-rate monitoring machine for 159 minutes and poor communication among staff, worsened by consultants being on-call only after 5pm as it was a weekend.

In response to the tragedy, the Royal Stoke has implemented changes such as having on-call consultants present during post-5pm ward rounds on weekends, improved communication, enhanced training, and new laptops.
