OUR A-Z LIST SHINES A SPOTLIGHT ON CRIMES WHICH HAPPEN MOST OFTEN IN STREETS WHERE YOU LIVE

- RICHARD GUTTRIDGE News Reporter

TENS of thousands of crimes were recorded in the West Midlands last year.

But away from the murders, rapes and robberies, lower-level offending - such as antisocial behaviour, burglaries and vehicle crime - can also have a major impact on people's lives.

The Birmingham Mail has analysed latest crime data to show residents how many of these crimes occurred in a year.

When looking at the data, which covered the 12 months to March, by far the most common crime is 'violence and sexual offences', which is all placed into one category by West Midlands Police.

Numbers are high because of the wide range of offences this covers - it takes in domestic abuse, fights outside pubs, sexual assaults and much more.

This is the most common type of offence in every policing area of the West Midlands, except one, Shirley, where shoplifting is highest.

Antisocial behaviour (ASB), a frequent blight on communities, also appears in the top three across many areas.

Other offences which make regular appearances include vehicle crime, criminal damage and arson.

In Birmingham, Lozells and East Handsworth has the highest violent and sexual offences crime rate.

The list also includes Black Country policing areas. These tends to be larger than those in Birmingham and for this reason may have higher figures, so should not be directly compared to Birmingham neighbourhoods.

Selly Oak: Violence and sexual offences (1,142), shoplifting (545), burglary (303)

Acocks Green: Violence and sexual offences (1,925), shoplifting (520), ASB (333)

Aldridge: Violence and sexual offences (1,141), shoplifting (551), vehicle crime (330)

Aston: Violence and sexual offences (2,171), ASB (469), other theft (383)

Bartley Green: Violence and sexual offences (1,384), criminal damage and arson (296), vehicle crime (222)
