ONWR seeks Myanmar aid on toxic river

The Office of the National Water Resources (ONWR) is awaiting a response from Myanmar regarding potential cooperation in tackling the contamination affecting Chiang Mai's Kok River, a water source for downstream communities.

The ONWR emphasised that such cooperation is crucial for protecting both public health and the environment along the river's course.

Surasee Kittimonton, secretary-general of the ONWR, expressed growing concern over reports of toxic contamination in the Kok River, with authorities advising the suspension of water use due to the hazardous levels of pollutants.

The ONWR has initiated discussions with the Mekong River Commission Secretariat (MRCS) and the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) to facilitate Myanmar's involvement in addressing the issue.
