Forces 'did not retreat' from disputed temple

Army spokesman Maj Gen Winthai Suwaree yesterday denied reports Thai troops were ordered to retreat after seizing control of the disputed Ta Kwai temple area in Surin on the Thai-Cambodian border.

He explained the term “retreat” in military context often refers to a tactical adjustment, nota sign of surrender or retreat in defeat.

He said tactical withdrawal is standard in combat zones, often used to reposition forces or allow for air strikes. Such movements are not indicative of giving up the operation but are instead parts of military strategy.

The main aim of the operation ‘was to ensure no Cambodian forces remained within the operational boundary, he said.
