Marriage bid foiled

The couple — a Hindu woman from Karoli in Gandhinagar and a Muslim man from Kathwada — had arrived at the district registrar and Special Marriage Registration office at about 9.30 am to complete formalities.

According to sources, the woman was brought to court wearing a black advocate’s coat, allegedly in a bid to avoid attention and possible opposition.

Suspicion arose when lawyers present at the court realised she was not a practising advocate. They informed Karanj police, following which members of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal gathered at the complex, raising slogans and alleging 'love jihad'.
