MARTYRS HAVE SET SIGHTS ON HISTORY

BECOMING a part of club history is always a huge honour - but it means even more when it's a club as prestigious as Merthyr Town.

The Martyrs are chasing a best ever winning run of eight matches following a storming start of the season which has seen the Welsh side power to top of the Southern League Premier South table.

Paul Michael's men clinched a seventh successive victory with FA Cup success over the boss' former club Yate Town yesterday, meaning Saturday's league visit of Chesham United represents a rather significant milestone at Penydarren Park.

Three points there will see the Martyrs match the club record set by the famous Merthyr Tydfil team of 1987-a run which included a stunning 2-1 home leg victory over Atalanta in the European Cup, watched by a crowd of over 8,000, and eventually ended by the Italians in the second leg.

It's a legacy which lives on with huge pride in south Wales and one which boss Michael is privileged to just recognise, let alone recreate.
