The former Scotland international’s strike consigned City to back-to-back pre-season defeats against league opposition, but manager Jerry Gill was encouraged by his side.

“It was a step up from us today, which is what you want in pre-season,” said the City boss. “I thought we were excellent.

“Our shape and discipline without the ball was really good. It looked like us from last year, even with a few changes.

“We’re disappointed to concede the goal but there are way more positives which we can concentrate on.”

Ewan Clark curled a freekick a yard over for the Romans as they tried to force an early breakthrough.
