And for individuals needing a particular kind of care, pinpointing the best facility for seeking treatment can be a complicated process. To help patients find a standout institution that delivers the sort of medical attention they need, Newsweek is partnering with market research firm Statista to release this year's America's Best Specialized Hospitals ranking. The hospitals recognized here span five separate categories: hospitals focused on cancer, cardiology, neurology, orthopedics and conditions affecting children. These specialties address some of the country's most common medical conditions. Oncology, the branch of medicine focused on combating cancer, is crucial for much of the population: Statista has reported that a man born in the U.S. has a 41 percent chance of developing invasive cancer, while an American woman has a 39 percent chance in her lifetime. Orthopedic disorders also represent a large swath of the U.S. medical landscape-the treatment of musculoskeletal diseases is projected to reach nearly $61 billion in revenue in 2024. Cardiovascular diseases are some of the medical world's most serious conditions. As a group, they are the leading cause of death globally, taking nearly 18 million lives per year, according to the World Health Organization. Specialized hospitals also play important roles beyond patient care. The 2023 Industry Impact Report from the Children's Hospital Association found that 93 percent of hospitals surveyed shared their findings from research or clinical trials with the public and private sectors. But although specialized care is in high demand, it isn't always easy to find. For example, there are relatively few neurologists employed in the U.S.-only 9,350 of them altogether, Statista has reported. This makes medical centers with the right specialists very valuable to people affected by neurological disorders.
